RightCount Responds to State Election Board’s “Activist” Rule Change

Atlanta, GA: RightCount, an organization dedicated to rebuilding trust in Georgia’s secure election system, today released the follow statement from Georgia State Chair Eric Johnson. Johnson, a Republican, previously served as State Senate Pro Tempore and Chair of the Senate Ethics Committee.

“The State Election Board’s misguided actions amount to little more than a solution in search of problem. Despite this activist approach to inject uncertainty into the election process, Georgia law is clear in requiring county election boards to certify their election results on November 12. RightCount is committed to supporting county election officials in upholding the rule of law and their statutory obligations,” said RightCount Co-Chair Eric Johnson.

On Tuesday, Georgia’s State Election Board passed a new rule ahead of the November election that will give county election boards the authority to demand more information, including the ability to conduct inquiries, before certifying election results. The vote passed 3-2, with board Chairman John Fervier crossing party lines to vote alongside Ghazal opposing the rule. Fervier was appointed as chairman of the board by Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp earlier this year.
