PRESS RELEASE: RightCount Praises Fulton County Judge’s Ruling on Election Certification in Georgia

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 15, 2024

Atlanta, Ga. – RightCount Georgia Chair, former State Senator Eric Johnson, released the following statement applauding today’s ruling that confirms the legal requirement for county election boards in Georgia to certify election results. The ruling came in response to claims from Fulton County election board member Julie Adams, who sought to avoid certifying the 2024 presidential primary results due to personal concerns. The judge clearly stated that the law mandates certification by county election boards and rejected Adams’ argument.

“This ruling is a win for Georgia voters and the rule of law. Certification is a critical part of elections, and it should never be subject to the whims of individuals. We commend Judge McBurney for affirming that election boards must fulfill their legal duties and protect the voice of every voter in Georgia, said former Senator Eric Johnson, Chair of RightCount Georgia.

Johnson also highlighted the broader importance of this ruling in maintaining public trust in the election process, adding:

“When concerns about fraud arise, there are legal channels through which they can be addressed. But refusing to certify election results on a whim undermines our Constitution and the rule of law. RightCount will continue to defend the integrity of our elections and ensure that every lawful vote is counted and certified.”

Judge McBurney underscored that election disputes should be settled through appropriate legal means, including election contests filed in court, and emphasized that election board members are not empowered to act as investigators or judges. The decision further clarifies that delays in receiving election information are not grounds for withholding certification.
